Askar, our Bishkek warrior

Bishkek Shopping

Shopping in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan,

The Bishkek days were hectic, full of appointments with a range of different people such as artisans, politicians, NGO workers and businessmen. Lots of tea and lots of taxis!
Without our interpreter Askar we simpy wouldn’t have survived. He is one of the few men who decided to stay in the country in spite of the negative opinions on the future. He is smart, well educated and with a healthy sense of humor.

For the future of Kyrgyzstan, these men are indispensable. Partly educated in Europe, he had to make a tough choice: get married and stay in Europe or go back to Kyrgyzstan and try to make something of your life. At least there is a huge choice of beautiful girls. More than 60% of the young population is female.

Now it is time to leave the city. We continue our Silk Road Journey to Kochkor, a village south of Bishkek, our first step into nomad life in the 21st Century. Stay tuned – more to follow soon!
